Adventure Race® National series
Adventure racing is a relatively new sport that attracts ‘every day’ people and elite athletes
from around the globe. It has emerged as the big brother to marathons, road races and triathlons.
According to Adventure Sports Magazine, adventure racing has expanded from 12 races held in 1998,
to over 500 scheduled in the year 2005 and has sometimes been called the off-road triathlon.
Anaconda is the principal sponsor of the Lorne and Augusta legs of the national Adventure Race series which is run by
Rapid Ascent headed up by former world champion kayaker John Jacoby who has competed in many
adventure races around the world.
The races have their own unique characteristics to suit their terrain but all include a
combination of running, cycling, swimming and kayaking.
Typically, the adventure races are run over one day (although Forster NSW is over two) with up to 1,000 competitors
who race individually and in teams where each team member completes as "little" as one of the legs. It generally takes four hours for the winner to complete
the race and eight hours for the slowest competitor.
The 2010 International Adventure Race Series includes:
May 1st & 2nd - Forster Adventure Race, NSW
April 24th - New Zealand Adventure Race, Waihi, North Island NZ
A Brief History
The first Anaconda Adventure Race was held in Lorne, Victoria, in December 2005. With nearly 1,200 competitors, the 2007 Anaconda Adventure Race at Geographe Bay, WA is believed to
have been the biggest ever adventure race by participation ever held, not just in Australia, but world-wide. It was also the scene for the inaugural
Trans-Tasman showdown between two of the strongest countries in this form of racing in the world: New Zealand & Australia.
The 2009 International Adventure Race Series included:
December 6th - Anaconda Adventure Race, Lorne, VIC
November 8th - Anaconda Adventure Race, Augusta, WA
